A Truly Bottomless Soda

This trick will have your audience completely baffled as you transform an empty soda can into a full one, in front of their very eyes! You can prove it, too; simply pop the tab and pour someone a drink!

Set-Up:

  • Poke a hole in the side of a soda can using a thumb tac, about a third of the way down. This is easier than you’d expect. Let the soda drain down to the level of the hole; you should now have 3/4 of a can of soda.
  • Color in the tab on top with a black whiteboard marker. Do this carefully, so the tab looks like it’s been popped.
  • Crunch the can a bit, so it looks authentic.

Procedure:

  • Pull the can out of a garbage can in front of your audience. Explain to them that one of them has been very wasteful: he has thrown away his bottomless soda!
  • Tell them you understand, however; the can does look empty. As you say this, tilt the can forward, showing them the “open” top while covering the pinhole with your thumb.
  • “Magically” restore the tab, simply by waving your hand over it (actually, you’ll be wiping off the marker with your thumb).
  • Keeping your thumb over the pin hole, slowly shake the can. The pressure from the fizz will cause the can to dramatically straighten itself out.
  • Pop open the can and pour someone a drink!

Obviously, the rigged can must not be too closely inspected. Cover your tracks by crushing the can and throwing it back into the trash can. Even if somebody dug it back out, it would be difficult for them to spot the pinhole because the can is crushed.
